BRUNEIAN youth can now apply for a scholarship to attend the 2014 One Young World Summit (OYW), which will take place in Dublin, Ireland from October 15-19.
The annual summit provides young delegates the opportunity to debate and formulate solutions on pressing global issues.
Previous Bruneian OYW ambassadors and scholarship recipients; Iswandy Ahmad (OYW 2011 Zurich, Switzerland), Najihah Kamilah Latif (OYW 2012 Pittsburgh, United States), and Dk Siti Sarbanun Pg Hidup (OYW 2013 Johannesburg, South Africa) shared why young Bruneians should attend the youth summit.
Najihah said it was a proud moment for her to have brought the Brunei flag to Pittsburgh.
“OYW gives youth the opportunity to learn and be inspired, alongside other proactive and highly motivated youth from all over the world.
“It is also a chance to meet international celebrities who are trying to make good changes in their community,” said Najihah.
Another OYW ambassador, Dk Siti Sarbanun, said she was inspired to have attended dialogue sessions with former United Nations Secretary-general Kofi Anan; Jamie Oliver, and 2006 Novel Peace Prizelaureate for social business in Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
“My experience attending the OYW was just amazing. During some breakout sessions, we got to draft and outline possible solutions for current issues in our respective countries by adapting others’ best practices,” said Dk Siti Sarbanun.
Meanwhile, Iswandy recommended young Bruneians to attend the summit to be inspired by world-class mentors such as Kofi Annan, Bob Geldoff, Jamie Oliver, Bill Clinton and youth from other countries who inspire others with their work.
“I recommend Bruneians to apply to be OYW ambassadors, as previous Bruneians went there since 2010, and are now making a difference in Brunei, for example in educationHIV prevention and others.
“Apply and when you come back, talk to the other ambassadors for post-OYW initiatives that you want to pursue,” he added.
OYW applications are open to those aged 18 to 30 from every country, industry, sector and background.
Applicants from 114 selected countries, including Brunei, are also eligible for the All Bar None scholarshipscheme, the organiser’s initiative to ensure people from less represented countries also have the opportunity to participate in the summit.
Ambassadors are required to have demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to making a positive change.
Many have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues, including the role of business in society, transparency in business and government, the impact of climate change, global health and hunger relief, the One Young World Summit website stated.
Successful scholarship recipients will attend the summit in Dublin next year with return tickets, accommodation, meals and transportation costs covered by OYW.
Registrations can be made online at www.oneyoungworld.com/join/candidate while All Bar None scholarship scheme registration is at www.oneyoungworld.com/all-bar-none-2014.
As of press time yesterday, 17 people from Brunei have applied to attend the event. According to the One Young World Summit website, 1,250 delegates from 190 countries attended the gathering earlier this year.
