BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
MORE than a hundred sports fishing enthusiasts from across the country gathered in the capital yesterday to participate in the third fishing competition held in conjunction with the 43rd anniversary of the naming of Bandar Seri Begawan, previously known as Brunei Town.
The competition was jointly organised by the Bandar Seri BegawanMunicipal Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Captain Fred’s Fishing Marine Supply Company, to promote sport fishing and enliven the capital.
It was initially divided into the two categories of boating and onshore, however the boating category had to be cancelled due to reports of strong winds.
The onshore fishing event was held along Jalan Residency in the capital up until the car park area of Kg Sungai Lampai marine fire station. Each participant was entitled to submit only one fish for all categories.
Md Haffiz Panjang won the onshore individual category with his catch weighing 1.1kg while the onshore team category was won by Rimba Villa with a catch weighing in at 1.21kg.
Jasniah Hj Serudin won the fastest catch category with a recorded time of eight minutes and eight seconds.
The childrens’ category was won by Md Nor Safwan Tujoh. The winners received trophies, prize moneyand fishing tackles.
Presenting the prizes was guest of honour Pg Dato Paduka Hj Abd Rahman Pengiran Seri Indera Pg Hj Ismail, chairman of Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board.
The presentation ceremony was held at the car park area of Kg Sungai Lampai marine fire station.
The event was also held to coincide with the December school holiday so families can spend quality time together.
It was also an activity for youngsters to participate in.
The department has also previously organised a netball championship and go-kart racing competition.
A “Larian Bandar” (run) will be held on January 26 next year.
Registration for the run will be announced soon.
