BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday sent a congratulatory message to the Emperor of Japan, His Imperial Majesty Akihito, on the occasion of his 80th birthday today.
In a congratulatory message to His Imperial Majesty, His Majesty said it was a pleasure for him and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha to meet His Imperial Majesty and Her Imperial Majesty Empress Michiko during the visit to Tokyo last May and for His Majesty to meet Their Imperial Majesties again during the recent 40th ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit.

His Majesty also looked forward to continue working with His Imperial Majesty in “strengthening the warm friendship and important cooperation” shared between Brunei and Japan, according to a statement issued by His Majesty’s Office yesterday.
His Majesty concluded the message by conveying his “kindest regards and best wishes for the continued good health and happiness” of Their Imperial Majesties.
In a similar message to the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, His Majesty expressed his pleasure of meeting the Japanese premier this month and congratulated him and the Japanese government on the successful hosting of the commemorative summit.
“His Majesty was especially pleased with the progress that had been achieved in cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Japan, and looked forward to working with His Excellency Shinzo Abe to strengthen the much-valued tied between the two countries as Brunei Darussalam and Japan commemorated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year,” the statement said.
His Majesty also wished the premier a joyous celebration for the Japanese emperor’s birthday.
Meanwhile, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade also sent a congratulatory message to Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida.
In the message, His Royal Highness conveyed his “deepest respects” to His Imperial Majesty and the Japanese royal family, and congratulated the foreign minister and the Japanese government and people on the emperor’s birthday.
“I have much appreciated working with you over the past year and thank you most warmly for your support during our chairmanship of ASEAN,” His Royal Highness told Kishida in the message.
His Royal Highness also looked forward to strengthening the regional partnership and longstanding bilateral ties between the countries, in light of the 30 year anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
His Royal Highness concluded the message by wishing his counterpart a “happy celebration and prosperous new year”.
