BRUNEI -MUARA
THE Community Development Department (JAPEM) Volunteer Unit reached out to an underprivileged elderly man in Kg Lambak Kanan yesterday as part of its Sentuhan Kasih Programme.
A group of 20 volunteers gathered at the dilapidated house of 74-year-old Sagap Mohammad, where they spent the day cleaning the compound and carrying out minor refurbishments. They also donated basic food items to the welfare recipient.
Sagap lives alone and relies on the monthly welfare allowance provided by JAPEM. His wife and only child have passed away. A neighbour has also taken pity on Sagap’s plight, helping to take care of the lonesome man.
“The neighbour constantly feeds him and takes him in for the night. Every morning, he will be sent back to his house for him to relax,” said Community Development Officer Hjh Qistina @ Muizza Hj Abd Murad, adding that Sagap often feels nostalgic about the past.
Under the Sentuhan Kasih Programme, the JAPEM Volunteer Unit will conduct follow-ups with Sagap in the future to ensure that his welfare needs are met. The aftercare process also aims to provide emotional and motivational support for the welfare recipient.
Organised for the fourth time, the programme aims to alleviate the burden of underprivileged members of the community as well as to encourage philanthropy.
Hjh Qistina explained that the Sentuhan Kasih Programme, loosely translated as A Touch of Love, will be carried out on a monthly basis beginning 2014 with updates on upcoming activities posted on their official Facebook page ‘Sukarelawan JAPEM’.
Members of the public or NGOs wishing to participate in the programme were also welcomed to team up with the JAPEM Volunteers Unit.
