MANILA - THE Philippine government urged yesterday the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), to respect the ceasefire that both sides declared unilaterally this Yuletide season.
The Philippine government peace panel in talks with the CPP said in a statement the Aquino administration echoes the public demand for a just and lasting peace.
“We call on the Communist Party of the Philippines to be faithful to the spirit and letter of the ceasefire that they have declared and to respect the prolonged ceasefire declared by our Government,” it said.
The CPP has declared a shorter truce on December 24 to 26 and December 31 to January 2, 2014.
The Philippine government, on the other hand, declared a 25-day suspension of offensive military operations against the leftist New People’s Army (NPA), from December 21 to January 15, 2014.
“We are one with our fellow countrymen and women in the belief that better days are ahead, and we join in the call for peace throughout the country, a peace that will allow everyone–rebels and non-rebels alike – to celebrate the holidays free from fear and uncertainty,” the government peace panel said.
The NPA, which was formed in March 29, 1969, has been waging war against the government for over four decades.
