BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

local man has been jailed for a year following his conviction for trespassing and theft of $500 from two stores.

Khairuddin Hj Jair, 41, pled guilty to three charges at the Magistrates’ Court last Saturday.

Addressing the court, the defendant asked for leniency saying he was unemployed and stole the money to to buy petrol and personal necessities.

He told the court he had been promised financial assistance from the Community Development Department but had yet to receive it.

Court documents state that on December 3, Khairuddin stole $200 from Dekor Rumah in Kg Jangsak. While no one was inside the store, he played with the cash register buttons until one opened the till. On his way out, he bumped into a store worker who noticed the till was open and chased the defendant to his car.

The second incident occurred on December 18, when the defendant went to Teguh Raya department store in Kiulap to purchase a pair of pants. Seeing he did not have enough money, he went to a different shop in the same building where he stole $300 from a white bag placed in a cupboard.

The shopkeeper was busy chatting with a friend at the time and did not see Khairuddin enter the store.

In a separate incident on October 24, the defendant also trespassed on workers’ quarters being Nashasconvenience store in Kg Rimba, but left after he woke one of the residents.

On record, the defendant has previous criminal convictions. He will serve his sentence at Jerudong Prison.
